Electronics that vanish in the environment or the body
ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2012) ? Physicians and environmentalists alike could soon be using a new class of electronic devices: small, robust and high performance, yet also biocompatible and capable of dissolving completely in water -- or in bodily fluids.
Researchers at the University of Illinois, in collaboration with Tufts University and Northwestern University, have demonstrated a new type of biodegradable electronics technology that could introduce new design paradigms for medical implants, environmental monitors and consumer devices.
"We refer to this type of technology as transient electronics," said John A. Rogers, the Lee J. Flory-Founder Professor of Engineering at the U. of I., who led the multidisciplinary research team. "From the earliest days of the electronics industry, a key design goal has been to build devices that last forever -- with completely stable performance. But if you think about the opposite possibility -- devices that are engineered to physically disappear in a controlled and programmed manner -- then other, completely different kinds of application opportunities open up."
Three application areas appear particularly promising. First are medical implants that perform important diagnostic or therapeutic functions for a useful amount of time and then simply dissolve and resorb in the body. Second are environmental monitors, such as wireless sensors that are dispersed after a chemical spill, that degrade over time to eliminate any ecological impact. Third are consumer electronic systems or sub-components that are compostable, to reduce electronic waste streams generated by devices that are frequently upgraded, such as cellphones or other portable devices.
Transient electronic systems harness and extend various techniques that the Rogers' group has developed over the years for making tiny, yet high performance electronic systems out of ultrathin sheets of silicon. In transient applications, the sheets are so thin that they completely dissolve in a few days when immersed in biofluids. Together with soluble conductors and dielectrics, based on magnesium and magnesium oxide, these materials provide a complete palette for a wide range of electronic components, sensors, wireless transmission systems and more.
The team has built transient transistors, diodes, wireless power coils, temperature and strain sensors, photodetectors, solar cells, radio oscillators and antennas, and even simple digital cameras. All of the materials are biocompatible and, because they are extraordinarily thin, they can dissolve in even minute volumes of water.
The researchers encapsulate the devices in silk. The structure of the silk determines its rate of dissolution -- from minutes, to days, weeks or, potentially, years.
"The different applications that we are considering require different operating time frames," Rogers said. "A medical implant that is designed to deal with potential infections from surgical site incisions is only needed for a couple of weeks. But for a consumer electronic device, you'd want it to stick around at least for a year or two. The ability to use materials science to engineer those time frames becomes a critical aspect in design."
Since the group uses silicon, the industry standard material for integrated circuits, they can make highly sophisticated devices in ways that exploit well-established designs by introducing just a few additional tricks in layout, manufacturing and supporting materials. As reported in the Sept. 28 issue of the journal Science, the researchers have already demonstrated several system-level devices, including a fully transient 64-pixel digital camera and an implantable applique designed to monitor and prevent bacterial infection at surgical incisions, successfully demonstrated in rats.
Next, the researchers are further refining these and other devices for specific applications, conducting more animal tests, and working with a semiconductor foundry to explore high-volume manufacturing possibilities.
"It's a new concept, so there are lots of opportunities, many of which we probably have not even identified yet" Rogers said. "We're very excited. These findings open up entirely new areas of application, and associated directions for research in electronics."
The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency supported this work. The Tufts University team was led by Fiorenzo Omenetto; the Northwestern University team was led by Youggang Huang. Rogers is affiliated with the departments of materials science and engineering, of chemistry, of mechanical science and engineering, of bioengineering and of electrical and computer engineering, and with the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology and the Frederick Seitz Materials Research Laboratory at the U. of I.

US urges tighter border security in Mali, region
UNITED NATIONS (AP) ? The U.S. says western and northern African nations need to tighten security on their borders to combat the increased movement of extremists, weapons and drugs.
Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton says the Sahel region is a "powder keg" of hunger, displacement and insecurity, and the world can't ignore the situation.
She's welcoming the formation of a core group of countries to coordinate aid to Mali, which is facing an Islamist rebellion.
She said Wednesday at the United Nations that those countries must help train Mali's security forces, help them drive out extremists, and work to protect human rights,
Clinton also says the threat from extremists is rising across the largely impoverished region known as the Sahel, which stretches from the Atlantic to the Red Sea.

Little 'Mrs. Bieber,' 6, loses brain cancer battle
By Scott Stump, TODAY contributor
The 6-year-old Boston girl best known as ?Mrs. Bieber?? died Wednesday morning from the brain cancer she had battled for nearly her entire life.
TODAY
Justin Bieber and Avalanna Routh.
Avalanna Routh struck up a friendship with Justin Bieber after he heard her story and about her love of his music. The two had a Valentine?s Day date in New York in February after an online campaign and a report by WHDH came to Bieber?s attention. In 2011, a Jimmy Fund benefit helped Routh "marry" Bieber in a pretend ceremony, earning her the moniker ?Mrs. Bieber? and the popular #MrsBieber hashtag on Twitter.
A post on her official Twitter account, which has 146,000 followers, reported the news of her death, which was confirmed by multiple media outlets.
"Our darling Avalanna went to Heaven this morning. Oh Avalanna, the brightest star?-- you took our hearts with you, our greatest Love," the post read.
On their date in February, Routh declared she had "Bieber fever,?" and playfully messed with the pop star's famous hairdo. The two played board games and signed autographs for each other. In June, Bieber brought Routh onstage at the Apollo Theater.
"It?s wonderful,?? Aileen Routh, Avalanna?s?mother, told NBC News after the date in February. "It was another fun moment.?"
"That was one of the best things I have ever done," Bieber tweeted after their date. "She was AWESOME. Feeling really inspired right now."

Delightful Dining Rooms ready for Entertaining | Decorative Touch
Home / In Style, Tips / Delightful Dining Rooms ready for Entertaining
Soon the holidays will be here and your Kansas City home will be filled with tantalizing aromas, laughter, conversation, and joy. When entertaining in your home, especially during the holidays, you want to make sure that your dining room is ready to accommodate everyone. If you have a rather large extended family and know that your home is usually where everyone plans to party, you?ll need a larger dining room with a long rectangular table that can seat more guests comfortably. Remember, when selecting chairs for your dining room table, your guests should be able to sit comfortably with enough elbow room.
For those who usually have smaller and more intimate gatherings, a square or round table may work best for your needs. However, you still want to make sure that proper elbow room is given to each guest as well. Experiment with different patterns, colors, and textures to bring life to your dining room also. The materials you choose are what really help to set the atmosphere of the room, as well as give it special details that catch the eye.
Need to see a few examples? Take a look at a few delightful dining rooms that would be perfect for entertaining homes:

Sony announces new line of slim external batteries for smartphones and tablets
Sony announced on Monday that it will introduce a new line of external batteries for smartphones and tablets. Shipping in capacities of 3,500 to 7,000mAh, these external juice boxes weigh around 198 grams and measure 130.6mm by 12.9mm, making them about the size of a modern smartphone. Charging devices via USB, Sony claims that these portable pick me ups can be recharged up to 500 times and can charge most smartphones in an hour and a half. If toting another smartphone-like device around doesn't sound ideal to you, Sony will also be releasing smaller "stick-type" (think flash drives) external batteries in assorted colors. Both battery types are set to launch this fall, with prices ranging from 2,300 yen ($30) to 7,000 yen ($90). Wouldn't it just be easier to sell a marginally thicker phone with world-class battery life? A boy can dream...

in the hereandnow: Family, Fluid, Strong and Fragile
I asked my sister, Callie, if she would write a post about her family's experience this past year. ?Callie, Jason and Vincent have opened their home and their lives in foster care. ?They are in a transition time now - expecting a baby after 8 years - and getting ready to say goodbye to the four foster kids who have been theirs this year. ?I have been deeply moved watching their journey of love. ?
Here is what she wrote.
Soon our kids will leave our home, for them the only home they have ever known; for the littlest ones the only family they have ever known. I will have to face myself, and whether or not I really believe that the joys and struggles of this year have made a lasting difference, as I release them into a merciless world.? As I pack their thing-- each day, choosing something else to sort out, separating theirs from ours, them from us?I am grieved for them.? Grieved for their loss of life here that they have grown to love so much, and for the feeling of safety and security that has allowed them to thrive and move towards wholeness as children.? With no idea of what lies ahead for them, only intimate knowledge of what is behind them and the pain and confusion that has followed them through their time here with the constant goal of reunification to the life from which they came, I grieve this loss for them, deeply.

God, in your loving mercy, hear our prayer.
If you'd like to participate in an online shower for Jason and Callie, or send them a message, follow the link.?? ? ? ? ? ?

Amir Ali Hajizadeh, a brigadier general in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, made the comments to Iran's state-run Arabic language?Al-Alam?television, according to a report on the network's website.
"Iran will not start any war but it could launch a pre-emptive attack if it was sure that the enemies are putting the final touches to attack it,"?Al-Alam?said, paraphrasing the military commander.
Hajizadeh said any attack on Iranian soil could trigger "World War Three".
"We can not imagine the Zionist regime starting a war without?America's support. Therefore, in case of a war, we will get into a war with both of them and we will certainly get into a conflict with American bases," he said
"In that case, unpredictable and unmanageable things would happen and it could turn into a World War Three."
Prime Minister?Benjamin Netanyahu?has made increasing hints that?Israel?could strike Iran's nuclear sites and has criticised U.S. President?Barack Obama's position that sanctions and diplomacy should be given more time to stop Iran getting the atomic bomb.
Tehran?denied it is seeking weapons capability and says its atomic work is peaceful, aimed at generating electricity.

PowerSkin launches NFC-friendly battery case for Galaxy S III
It's tough to get excited about phone cases -- really tough. But, we'll admit that PowerSkin's new Galaxy S III case did pique our interest a bit. It's not a revolutionary design that makes us rethink smartphone protection, but it does pack a number of nice features that definitely make it more interesting than your average silicone skin. Most notable is NFC integration, which means you wont have to take your GS III out of its case to make payments or tap and share data. Of course, like other PowerSkins, it also packs a backup battery (this one a 1,500 mAh pack) that lets you cruise through a day of heavy usage with little worry. That silicone shield should also help keep your precious handset safe in the event of an accidental drop or fall (just don't hit it with a hammer or anything). They're available now for $80 and, if you're curious, the official press release awaits you after the break.

Nexus 7 can shoot 720p video from its front-facing camera, but is it really useful?
Why talk about it, when we can just show you? OK, so we'll talk about it a little bit. It turns out the Nexus 7 can shoot 720p video from its front facing camera. It's pretty cool --, and the fine folks over at XDA Developers are to thank for bringing this little nugget to the world's attention. But, is it really that useful? Maybe, maybe not -- that all depends on your particular outlook and potential use case for such a thing. But, 720p is 720p. It still isn't the greatest quality video in the world though, but enabling the feature isn't all that difficult.
So, the first way is the XDA way. One of the devs over there discovered that the camera natively supports shooting at 720p, but that Google left out the media profiles that allow its functionality. To enable it, there's some modifying of xml files required, and the full details can be had over at the source link below.
But, some of us are lazy. So, there is another way. An application in the Google Play Store called Camera JB+ has just received an update that enables the functionality. It's a paid app, and costs £1.49/$1.99 and is essentially the stock Jelly Bean camera app, but with some added tweaks and is available also on ICS. The same developers brought us a similar app previously based around the ICS camera. With this, no modifying of anything potentially scary is involved, and when you open up the camera app there is a option sat waiting for 480p/720p video recording.
We might want it, simply because we can have it. But then again, if you do happen to record yourself using a front facing camera from time to time, it might well be a welcome modification. Whether you choose the lazy way -- like a certain Android Central author -- or the nerdier way is entirely up to you.

BAGHDAD (AP) ? Insurgents killed at least 44 people in a wave of attacks against Iraqi security forces on Sunday, gunning down soldiers at an army post and bombing police recruits waiting in line to apply for jobs, officials said.
The violence, which struck at least 11 cities and wounded nearly 240 people, highlighted militant attempts to sow havoc in the country and undermine the government.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attacks, but security forces are a frequent target of al-Qaida's Iraq branch, which has vowed to reassert itself and take back areas it was forced from before U.S. troops withdrew from the country last year.
"What kind of life is this?" said Safeen Qadir, 26, a university student in Kirkuk. He described dead bodies and weeping, shouting relatives at bombing scenes in Kirkuk, where three midmorning explosions killed seven and wounded about 70.
"Because of the daily explosions, we must write our wills before go out of home," Qadir said. "The death exists in every inch of the city of Kirkuk, and no one is spared from the crime of terrorism."
In Sunday's deadliest attack, gunmen stormed a small Iraqi Army outpost in the town of Dujail before dawn, killing at least 10 soldiers and wounding eight more, according to police and hospital officials in the nearby city of Balad, about 80 kilometers (50 miles) north of Baghdad. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to release the information to reporters.
Hours later, a car bomb struck a group of police recruits waiting in line to apply for jobs with the state-run Northern Oil Co. outside the northern city of Kirkuk. City police commander Brig. Gen. Sarhad Qadir, no relation to the university student, said seven recruits were killed and 17 wounded. He said all the recruits were Sunni Muslims and blamed the early morning attack on al-Qaida.
The carnage stretched into the country's south, where bombs stuck to two parked cars exploded in the Shiite-dominated city of Nasiriyah, 320 kilometers (200 miles) southeast of Baghdad. The blasts were near the French consulate and a local hotel in the city, although the consulate did not appear to be a target of the attack.
Local deputy health director Dr. Adnan al-Musharifawi said two people were killed and three were wounded at the hotel, and one Iraqi policeman was wounded at the consulate. Al-Musharifawi said no French diplomats were among the casualties.
In Paris, France's Foreign Ministry said it "condemns with the greatest severity" the wave of attacks. In a statement, the ministry said it "especially condemned" the attack outside France's honorary consulate in Nasiriyah, which killed an Iraqi police officer and wounded a passer-by.
A statement by Iraq's Interior Ministry blamed al-Qaida for the onslaught.
"The attacks today on the markets and mosques are to provoke sectarian and political tensions," the statement said. "Our war against terrorism is continuing, and we are ready."
Al-Qaida's Iraq franchise, also known as the Islamic State of Iraq, has for years had a hot-and-cold relationship with the global terror network's leadership. The two shared the goal of targeting the U.S. military in Iraq and, to an extent, undermining the Shiite government that replaced Saddam Hussein's regime.
But al-Qaida leaders Osama bin Laden and Ayman al-Zawahri distanced themselves from the Iraqi militants in 2007 because their attacks also killed Iraqi civilians instead of focusing on Western targets.
A string of smaller attacks Sunday also struck nine other cities, including Baghdad.
In the capital's eastern Shiite neighborhood of Husseiniyah, roadside bombs killed a policeman and a passer-by, security and health officials said. Another eight people, including four soldiers, were wounded, the officials said.
The rest of the attacks were car bombs that hit cities stretching from the southern port city of Basra, Iraq's second largest, to the city of Tal Afar northwest of Baghdad, near the Syrian border.
The blast in Basra killed three people and wounded 24, while the bomb in Tal Afar killed two passers-by and wounded seven, officials said.
A pair of car bombs in southern Maysan province killed five people and wounded 40 outside a Shiite shrine to Imam Ail al-Sharqi, said the holy site's director, Ammar Abdullah.
A roadside bomb in Taji, just north of Baghdad, left two passers-by dead and 11 injured, and explosions in the Sunni towns of Hawija and Ar Riyad, outside the flashpoint city of Kirkuk north of Baghdad, wounded seven people.
In Tuz Khormato near the city of Kirkuk, 290 kilometers (180 miles) north of Baghdad, a car bomb outside of a market killed four and wounded 41 people, said Salahuddin provincial health director Raeed Ibrahim. And in Kirkuk itself, Qadir said three midmorning explosions, two car bombs and a roadside bomb, killed seven and wounded about 70.
Kirkuk has been a flashpoint for years with its mix of Sunni Arabs, Kurds and Turkomen, who all claim rights to the city and the oil-rich land that surrounds it.
Kurdish leaders long have sought to draw Kirkuk into their self-rule region of Iraq's three northernmost provinces, and have pushed for a census to determine the city's ethnic majority. But the majority Arab central government in Baghdad has delayed the census, which could incite widespread ethnic violence over Kirkuk's future.
