(Liz Braun, Jam! Movies).
Benjamin Mee (Damon) is a Los Angeles newspaper columnist and adventure writer who, as a single father, faces the challenges of raising his two young children.? Hoping that a fresh start and a new life will restore their family spirit, Mee quits his job and buys an old rural house outside the city with a unique bonus feature: a zoo named the Rosemoor Animal Park, where dozens of animals reside under the care of head zookeeper Kelly Foster (Johansson) and her dedicated team.? With no experience, limited time and a shoestring budget, Mee sets out with the support of his family and the local community to reopen the zoo.? Now, Benjamin is no longer reporting an adventure story; he?s living it in his own backyard.

Watching this movie was definitely an emotional experience for me. ?The story about a dad who loses his wife and has to take care of two hurting children while grieving himself, really struck a chord since it reminded me so much about my sister-in-law (you may remember that she lost her husband in a car accident two years ago). ?If you've ever experienced loss, this movie will definitely touch your heart. ?Be prepared to have tissues on hand!
I liked the fact that this was a true story about a family going from loss and despair to hope and perseverance. ?Although this is a family film, I was surprised at the language in it, even for a PG movie. ?There were some cuss words frequently used and a reference that you may find inappropriate to be coming out of a young child's mouth (although used humorously). ?I would recommend this for ages 10+ for that reason, as you may find it difficult to explain the reference I am talking about to a younger child (I won't use the exact word, but it refers to a male body part). ?
There are some really great themes overall including: hard work, dealing with grief, romance (the teen romance was tastefully represented), and compassion for animals. ? Though we were a bit caught off guard by the language, the good story line and themes overshadowed it.?
Matt Damon was definitely perfect in his role as a dad and I hope to see him in more roles like this!
