New slow-motion DoS attack: just a few PCs, little fear of detection

Qualsys Security Labs researcher Sergey Shekyan has created a proof-of-concept tool that could be used to essentially shut down websites from a single computer with little fear of detection. The attack exploits the nature of the Internet's Transmission Control Protocol (TCP), forcing the target server to keep a network connection open by performing a "slow read" of the server's responses.

The Slow Read attack, which is now part of Shekyan's open-source slowhttptest tool, takes a different approach than previous "slow" attacks such as the infamous Slowloris?a tool most notably used in 2009 to attack Iranian government websites during the protests that followed the Iranian presidential election. Slowloris clogs up Web servers' network ports by making partial HTTP requests, continuing to send pieces of a page request at intervals to prevent the connection from being dropped by the Web server.

Slow Read, on the other hand, sends a full request to the server, but then holds up the server's response by reading it very slowly from the buffer. Using a known vulnerability in the TCP protocol, the attacker could use TCP's window size field, which controls the flow of data, to slow the transmission to a crawl. The server will keep polling the connection to see if the client?the attacker?is ready for more data, clogging up memory with unsent data. With enough simultaneous attacks like this, there would be no resources left on the server to connect to legitimate users.

Shekyan said in his post about the tool that this type of attack could be prevented by setting up rules in the Web server's configuration that refuse connections from clients with abnormally small data window settings, and limit the lifetime of an individual request.

2011 jobs data by race and education, at a glance (AP)

Unemployment dropped sharply for the least-educated Americans in 2011. Whites, Asians and Hispanics also enjoyed better job prospects. But African-Americans lagged far behind, with their unemployment near its highest level in decades. For workers without a high school diploma, seasonally adjusted unemployment slid from 15.1 percent to 13.8 percent. Among high school graduates with no college experience, it fell from 9.8 percent to 8.7 percent. Unemployment among those with a college degree_ an associate's, a bachelor's or more ? did tick down but not as much. The rate for those with a bachelor's degree or beyond declined from 4.8 percent to 4.1 percent. Five years ago, it was just 1.8 percent. Among whites, unemployment declined from 8.5 percent to 7.5 percent. Asians reported the lowest unemployment rate among the four identified racial groups: It slid from 7.2 percent to 6.8 percent. (Unlike for other racial categories, unemployment for Asians, a smaller group, isn't adjusted for seasonal factors.) The rate for Hispanics fell most steeply among the racial groups, from 12.9 percent to 11 percent. But that's because a disproportionate number of Hispanics have stopped looking for work and so aren't counted as unemployed. Immigration has also declined sharply. That means there are fewer foreign-born job-seekers. Unemployment among African-Americans was unchanged at 15.8 percent over the past year. Unemployment rate (in percentages, seasonally adjusted) December 2011 December 2010 Total 8.5% 9.4% White 7.5% 8.5% Black 15.8% 15.8% Hispanic 11.0% 12.9% Asian 6.8% 7.2% Less than a high school diploma 13.8% 15.1% High school graduates, no college 8.7% 9.8% Some college or associate degree 7.7% 8.2% Bachelor's degree or higher 4.1% 4.8%

How can Lyme disease be prevented and controlled?

ScienceDaily (Jan. 4, 2012) ? Lyme disease is the most commonly reported vector-borne disease in the United States, with the majority of cases occurring in the Northeast. It has been three decades since the agent of the disease, the spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi, and the ticks that vector it were identified. However, the number of Lyme disease cases have steadily increased.

In a new article appearing in the forthcoming issue of the Journal of Medical Entomology called "What Do We Need to Know About Disease Ecology to Prevent Lyme Disease in the Northeastern United States?" authors from Colorado State University and the Centers for Disease Control assess the potential reasons for the continued lack of success in prevention and control of Lyme disease in the northeastern United States, and they identify conceptual areas where additional knowledge could be used to improve Lyme disease prevention and control strategies.

Some of these areas include:

1) identifying critical host infestation rates required to maintain enzootic transmission of B. burgdorferi,

2) understanding how habitat diversity and forest fragmentation impacts acarological risk of exposure to B. burgdorferi and the ability of interventions to reduce risk,

3) quantifying the epidemiological outcomes of interventions focusing on ticks or vertebrate reservoirs, and

4) refining knowledge of how human behavior influences Lyme disease risk and identifying barriers to the adoption of personal protective measures and environmental tick management.

The article briefly summarizes existing prevention and control strategies and tools aimed at reducing human exposure to vector ticks and B. burgdorferi, and highlights conceptual areas where additional studies on the enzootic transmission cycle or the human-tick interface are needed to fill in the knowledge gaps preventing the development of novel, more effective Lyme disease prevention strategies and tools or the implementation of existing ones.

Because the likelihood of human exposure to the tick and the pathogen both can be influenced by human behavior, the authors focus not only on the density of infected ticks, which represents the fundamental (or acarological) risk of human exposure to B. burgdorferi, but they also provide an overview of studies that identify behavioral risk factors and explore areas where additional information in this field are needed.

Mayor Sullivan Explains Gov. Sheffield's Position Consulting Port of Anchorage

by Megan Mazurek

Story Created: Jan 4, 2012 AKST

Story Updated: Jan 5, 2012 at 7:22 PM AKST

Anchorage Mayor Dan Sullivan answers questions about why former Governor Bill Sheffield was hired to consult for the port expansion after stepping down.
Mayor Sullivan said that Sheffield did exactly what he was hired to do; manage the operations side of the port and keep it on track during the expansion. The mayor pointed out that Sheffield was never in charge of the construction, that part of the project was handled by the federal government. Sullivan says his administration entered into an agreement with Governor Sheffield to take advantage of his contacts, and to ease into the transition for his replacement in order for the port to run smoothly
"It's a sixty thousand dollar contract but it doesn't cost the city a dime because it comes out of the contracts we currently have with our federal lobbyists," said Mayor Sullivan. "It's no cost to the city it helps the transition and if anybody thinks Governor Sheffield needs a sixty thousand dollar contract he's a self made millionaire"
The contract between the municipality and governor Sheffield ends after one year.
