Two sources talk of Apple iPhone event around September 12th, part sales back it up (update: one more clue)

iPhone 2012 shell

Apple's plans for its next iPhone refresh may be getting very tangible, very quickly. It all started when iMore heard that Apple was preparing to hold an event unveiling the new hardware on September 12th, with a launch the following week on September 21st. Although the relative newcomer to the iPhone release date rumor game is still building its track record, that claim may have just gotten some extra meat: AllThingsD is joining in the chorus and touts its own sources pointing to an event in the same timeframe. While it's almost a month earlier in the year than Apple's iPhone 4S event was in 2011, it's supported by an Apple filing with the SEC showing a sharp uptick in supply purchasing during the spring, which it would need to start production for the fall. All of it is still rumor, of course, but past experience suggests that iOS fans may want to plan any September camping trips for the Apple Store line late in the month, not Labor Day weekend.

Update: Jim Dalrymple at The Loop, who's well known for his accurate one-word confirmations and denials of rumors, just posted his trademark "yep."

Cozi Family Organizer (for iPad)

How do you keep your household in order? Between managing finances, planning meals, remembering everyone's health status (allergies, doctor appointments), and keeping up with your to-do lists, running a family takes a lot of work and organization. An organizational Web app called Cozi aims to help you run your household more smoothly, and its iPad app, Cozi Family Organizer, seeks to help you out when you're on the go.

Unfortunately, both the Web app and iPad app are underwhelming.

Cozi Setup
Cozi's concept is to centralize important aspects of day-to-day family life. The Cozi iPad app works as a standalone service, though most people will likely prefer to set up their accounts via the Web app to explore the full range of features and tools. It is possible to set up entirely via the iPad app, though. The most crucial part of setting up is to create an entry for each member of the family, which can include pets, nannies, and extended family members. Everyone entered into the Cozi system is assigned a color (which you can change) so that any activity associated with that person becomes color-coded.

When you add an email address to any user's account, it gives the person a username with which to log in. So Uncle Artie gets a login because he has an email address, but the goldfish doesn't.

Cozi takes a few key aspects of personal organization, like keeping a calendar and to-do list, and simply makes them synced and shared across every family member's account. Everyone in your family who has a Cozi login will see the same calendar, shopping list, to-do list, and so forth, when they open Cozi.

Cozi iPad Features
The iPad app opens with a simple interface, with a rail of buttons on the left and a photo placeholder where you can upload a picture of your family to personalize the experience on the right. The main navigation comprises Calendar, To Do, Shopping, Journal, and Settings, which is a pared-down version of the Cozi Web app.

In fact, the iPad app omits more than I think it should. What's missing here that you get in the full Cozi online are messages, an email system, recipes, and recipe planning. From the iPad app, you can pull up and edit a little more information, like family members' email addresses and phone numbers, but those fields are confusingly tucked away under settings. I'd rather see a "People" or "Family Members" button included with the other main buttons.

Other family organizers simply give you more tools that are better designed for the complex needs of an entire household?although it's worth noting that none runs the full gamut. Even the ones we rate highly don't combine all the features available in competing products. For example, PCMag's Editors' Choice in this category, Famjama (beta), is the best I've seen and does at an excellent job of centralizing important family information, but even it doesn't have financial tools. Another Web app called Doxo, on the other hand, specifically handles finances and bill payment, but skips many other areas of family management.. Cozi's sweet spot is in lists and calendars, a lackluster niche to have?especially on an iPad?seeing as better digital calendars and list-making apps already exist.

Not So Cozy Security
Cozi comes in two versions: a free account that contains advertisements and some feature limitations and a paid Gold account ($4.99 per month or $49.99 per year), which removes both. One account works for the whole family, which sounds appealing except that all users login with the same password. Cozi recognizes different user names, in the form of each family member's email address, but one password is reused for everyone. A child could easily log in to the family account using his parent's email address. It's a security nightmare waiting to happen.

Shopping lists and to-do lists work as advertised, but lack solid management tools. I'd like to see Cozi add more control over which family members have read-only capabilities and who can actually edit and change a list. For example, if a mother created a shopping list and asked her spouse to buy all the items, she wouldn't want her bratty teenage son to quietly add the list things he wants? at least not without showing the items as "pending approval."

A bonus feature in the Cozi Web app that's absent from the mobile app (rather unfortunately?I think it's a missed opportunity) is recipe suggestions. If you find a recipe you like, you can automatically add all the ingredients to your grocery shopping list in the Web app. Wouldn't you want that same functionality on an iPad?

Family Organization on the Go
The Cozi Web app is a family management center with some decent shared calendar and list-making functions, but ultimately is not a website we recommend using, and thus, we cannot recommend the Cozi iPad app either. Our Editors' Choice for family organizers, Famjama (which is technically still in beta), is a much better option with tighter security features and overall better tools for keeping your family running smoothly. While Famjama does not have a dedicated iPad app, it does have a mobile-optimized site you can access from a Web browser.

Chicago Clean Energy Project Provides Environmental Benefits

Bridge Technology to Cleaner Future, Technology is 99 Percent Cleaner Than Conventional Coal Plants

CHICAGO, July 25, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Chicago Clean Energy, a proposed modern coal-gasification plant will pursue one of the most stringent air permits ever issued for an energy facility and will enable the clean-up of an existing 140-acre brownfield site on Chicago's Southeast Side, pending approval of authorizing legislation by Governor Patrick Quinn.?

"There is no debate that the site will actually be cleaner once the facility is constructed than it is today," said Dr. Robert Singer, a project manager at Environment and Ecology, Inc., a consultant to Chicago Clean Energy.?

The site is located at the former Chicago LTV Steel property, which has been found to have dangerous soil contaminants. "This clean-up represents an immediate, up-front benefit to the community by restoring and renewing a dangerous site that has existed in the neighborhood for decades," said Singer.

The facility will also operate under the country's most stringent emission standards, exceeding proposed EPA greenhouse gas limits by capturing of 85 percent of carbon dioxide emissions. Expected air permit limits for Chicago Clean Energy will be more restrictive than those issued to the Art Institute of Chicago or Northwestern Memorial Hospital.?

"No one would object to the potential impact of those facilities," said Hoyt Hudson, project manager of Chicago Clean Energy. "When it comes to emissions of impurities, we will be held to an even higher standard."

The Chicago Clean Energy technology uses a chemical process ? without burning coal or other feedstock ? to produce substitute natural gas and capture and remove impurities. Removing the component elements like sulfur, argon, and mercury is essential to producing the substitute natural gas. These additional products can be safely reused in construction, agriculture and manufacturing, or safely disposed of, rather than being released.?

"We agree that we have to find new, cleaner ways to generate energy for our economy," said Hudson.? "Gasification not only limits emissions as part of the actual process, but it also turns these pollutants into profits.? It's good for the environment and it cuts costs for consumers."

The Chicago Clean Energy project has been vetted by the State of Illinois over a five-year process, during which time the Governor already has signed four pieces of legislation, each of which passed both chambers of the Illinois General Assembly by wide margins, with strong statewide support from both political parties. The Governor currently is considering action on SB 3766, which enjoyed similar support in the General Assembly, to implement the prior policy decisions of the General Assembly and the Governor.

"We are hopeful Governor Quinn will approve the measure and put Illinois at the forefront of new clean energy technology," said Ted Stanlos, president of the Calumet Area Industrial Council. ?"We need this project to help revitalize our community and we ask that Governor Quinn move this project forward immediately."

About Chicago Clean Energy

Chicago Clean Energy is an initiative of Leucadia National Corporation (NYSE: LUK) that supports the $3?billion investment in green technology on the Southeast side of Chicago. The gasification facility to be located at 115th Street and Burley Avenue will produce substitute natural gas through the cleanest method of utilizing Illinois coal anywhere in the world. This Is Not A Drill: Marino's Of Mullica Hill Giving Out Free Slices Of ...

Apparently, Jersey peaches are a thing, they have a season, and said season has arrived. To celebrate, New Jersey chef Anthony Marino, in conjunction with the start of the Gloucester County 4-H Fair and Peach Festival, will be giving away FREE slices of peach pizza at his restaurant this Thursday, July 26th.

Chef Marino?s peaches come from Holtzhauser Farms and Grasso Farms, located a few miles from Marino?s in Mullica Hill, NJ, and additional pizza ingredients include freshly sliced speck ham, Brie, lemon-herb vinaigrette, fresh basil and local honey. Feeling less skeptical? We thought so.

A mausoleum built for Bolivar but worthy of Chavez

(AP) ? The towering, white mausoleum in downtown Caracas is for many Venezuelans a lot like Hugo Chavez, only in architectural terms: disproportionately larger-than-life, flamboyant and self-important.

And no, the grand tomb was not built for Venezuela's socialist president, who has grappled with his own mortality in his recent battle with cancer and is running for re-election.

It will cradle the remains of South American independence leader Simon Bolivar, who Chavez daily, rapturously and exhaustively exalts as the spiritual father of his own self-styled revolution.

The 160-foot (50-meter) mausoleum is to be inaugurated in the coming days, though it is not quite finished.

Its construction has been delayed, shrouded in secrecy and alternately hailed as fit for a hero of Bolivar's historical grandeur and criticized as an exaggerated reflection of Chavez's own ego and alleged desire to be seen as a reincarnation of the independence hero.

Its solemn black granite-floored interior is ready, but the surrounding plaza is not. Workers have been toiling day and night in recent weeks, laying patio tiles, wiring lamps, landscaping and molding concrete steps.

Chavez proposed the shrine, devoted exclusively to "The Liberator," two years ago when he decided he needed to know whether Venezuela's main founding father was poisoned.

Historians have generally thought that Bolivar, who rallied revolutionaries who won independence from Spain for what would become Venezuela, Colombia, Panama, Ecuador, Bolivia and Peru, succumbed to tuberculosis in 1830 at age 47.

But Chavez said he suspected otherwise. So he ordered Bolivar's tomb opened to great fanfare and convened a team of international scientists to study the remains. The initial verdict came on Bolivar's last birthday anniversary: No evidence of foul play.

By then, government officials had already decided it was high time to move Bolivar's bones from the adjacent National Pantheon, where his remains have been kept since 1876 along with those of more than 100 fellow heroes and heroines of the nation, which at Chavez's urging was renamed the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.

Chavez on Tuesday unveiled a new, photograph-like portrait of Bolivar, produced by researchers based on their studies of his remains. Chavez presented the image of Bolivar's face during an event at the presidential palace marking the 229th anniversary of his birth.

As for the mausoleum, Chavez said a few final details remain to be finished.

Its completion was initially promised for December 2011, then for May, the delays mocked by Chavez's detractors as typical of his 13-year-old administration.

Critics have also decried the lack of transparency.

Governments typically solicit proposals from renowned architects for such projects, opening them to an international field.

Not this one.

"In this case he gave it to friends, although it's not quite clear to me to whom exactly," said Oscar Tenreiro, a prominent Caracas architect who disapproves of the mausoleum.

No one has publicly identified the architect, though the person in charge of the project is Francisco Sesto, a Spanish-born architect named "Minister of State for the Transformation of Greater Caracas" by Chavez in late 2010.

Chavez created the job after an opposition candidate was elected mayor of Caracas; Sesto is a former culture minister whose job includes overseeing housing construction in the capital.

Chavez interrupted his televised speech on Tuesday to let Sesto make a televised appearance outside the mausoleum. "We're ready to turn over this mausoleum now," Sesto said.

Sesto did not respond to repeated requests for an interview through his spokeswoman.

In a public discussion of the project in early June, Sesto said it cost $140 million and was built because "we have always had the sense that Bolivar needed a mausoleum worthy of his grandeur."

"There was a lot of criticism that his remains were not in a dignified state" in the Pantheon, he added, noting that those who designed the mausoleum "heard a lot of ideas, including those of the president."

He did not say what exactly Chavez suggested, and defended the austere contemporary style, adding that natural light entering the roof would render "a sensitive and magical appearance" to Bolivar's pedestal-elevated sarcophagus.

In a blog entry entitled "Arrogance," Tenreiro remarked on the high quality of the construction and imported materials, including for the exterior white Spanish ceramic tiles and "weathering" steel that oxidizes to orange without losing strength.

"One appreciates the enormous mass, limpid and seductive in itself but gigantic and absurd, out of context, possessive of the same sin as the political system from which it originates."

Tenreiro expressed concern that the mausoleum's sloping southern facade, which connects it with the Pantheon, will become a water slide in heavy rains, potentially flooding the smaller, neoclassical former church.

A member of the governing board of Venezuela's College of Architects, Mitchele Vidal, did not like that the Pantheon, its back wall removed, was "converted into a hallway for entering the mausoleum."

Other critics have likened the sloping wall to that of a skate park, prompting Sesto to post on his blog a series of world-renowned edifices that also sport a slope.

Vidal called the mausoleum an "unnecessary" expenditure given the need in the very neighborhood it sits for investment in housing and better health care. From the top of the monument, where workers say a persistent flame will burn, one looks down to the east on a squalid collection of tin-roofed hovels.

But others believe Venezuelans deserve a towering monument.

"I don't think it's exaggerated at all," said Isis Berroteran, a 47-year-old housewife from the west-central town of Cagua as she admired it from her car. "The Pantheon, although spectacular, had become pretty small as the city grew."

A foreman whose workers were painting pipes inside the mausoleum's shell on Sunday, Jose Freytes, said he was initially skeptical of the monument but came to appreciate it as it took form.

Other countries, including the United States, have built imposing monuments to their founders. Why not Venezuela? After all, Bolivar helped liberate many lands.

"The essence of the idea is to elevate the name of Bolivar internationally. That's what it's about," said Freytes. "I think the president is doing the right thing."

Elias Pino, a historian and leading expert on Bolivar, considers the mausoleum Chavez's way of deepening his own identification in people's minds with the national hero.

"The political intent is that President Hugo Chavez be proclaimed the agent of Bolivar's will and interpreter of the gospel of Bolivar," he said.

"This monument will tie together both figures," he said, "and will not just be the mausoleum of Bolivar but also the entrance of President Chavez into the pantheon of patriots."

At public events, Chavez has sometimes raised a sword that belonged to Bolivar. On Tuesday, the president held up two old pistols that he said belonged to Bolivar and his lover Manuela Saenz, and had been donated to the government by a wealthy businessman who bought them at an auction in New York.

"They aren't for me, of course," Chavez said. "He had them and decided to donate them to the republic."

Chavez listened as Yanuacelis Cruz, an expert on the team that has examined Bolivar's bones, said further tests are being carried out to determine whether Bolivar had histoplasmosis, a fungal illness with symptoms similar to those of tuberculosis.

Chavez's rival in the presidential race, Henrique Capriles, said during a speech on Tuesday that the best way to honor Bolivar would be "solving Venezuelans' problems."

Capriles also said in a message on Twitter that regardless of what Chavez says, "the legacy of our Liberator Simon Bolivar belongs to all of us and will never belong to a certain political party."

Maximize Your Hard-Earned Dollars When Buying Real Estate ...

Posted on 21. Jul, 2012 by admin in A - New Project

Buying real estate is attracting a lot of interest these days. It can even become a career for you. Even though the economy is still a bit fickle and unpredictable, great properties are still in high demand. Now is the time to start. This article provides several useful tips that can help you make the best real estate purchasing decisions.

Make sure your appraiser has five years under their belt before you hire them! Hire your own appraiser instead of taking a recommendation from your real estate agency. Conflict of interest may exist in that situation. You will want to make sure your inspector has the right credentials.

Purchasing real estate should be approached in a highly organized manner. Organize your information in a notebook. When you get information from classified ads, websites, your agent or just acquaintances, keep it all together in one place. This way, all of your data can be found in one place when you need to reference it.

When searching the property market for potential purchases, you need to be both realistic and patient. You will probably not be able to find the perfect piece of property right away, or even any time soon.

Even if you are buying your home only for yourself, you should have someone go with you to look at the house, preferably someone with home buying experience. A second eye might be able to pick out flaws in the house that you yourself overlooked. Ask them to become involved in the process also by asking questions of the realtor.

Make sure you are aware of what your credit report states prior to starting house hunting. After you get your credit report, you will want to carefully scrutinize to see if there are any outstanding issues, and report the mistakes that you have found. You will need to know how good or bad your credit is before you start looking for a home loan.

Always do your research before purchasing something. Lots of people are too eager to get into the real estate market and end up making bad purchasing which causes them to lose a great deal of time and money. Therefore, before purchasing any property, you must ensure you find out information about the area that surrounds your property, the crime rate in the area, the property?s age, and more.

It is of utmost importance to have a good understanding of mortgage loan terms when buying a home. Knowing everything you can about monthly mortgage payments and total cost of the loan will minimize all of your confusion.

When purchasing real estate, it is important to have additional funds set aside because there might be unexpected costs. Buyers typically figure out their closing costs by totaling the down payment, any points that they pay to the lender, and all real estate taxes after they are prorated. However, additional expenses are frequently added to the closing costs, including improvement bonds, school taxes, and other location-specific items.

Be moderate in your approach when considering a purchase of real estate property. The worst thing to do is be aggressive with the price. Although it?s important to be resolute about some terms, allow your real estate agent and attorney to handle the negotiations because they are the true experts in that field.

It must now be apparent why real estate buying is so very popular. There are so many ways to do it. You can also find lots of helpful ideas on how to search for and purchase real estate effectively. You should follow these tips if you want to purchase a property that is right for you.

Obama Wants $1 Billion For "Master Teachers Corps"

I'm tring to work out from TFA whether this is aimed at recruiting new teachers, or developing existing ones. If it's the former, then there have been various similar schemes (or perhaps it's a single often-rebranded scheme) in the UK over the last decade or so. The focus hasn't always been so narrowly on the STEM subjects, but it has tended to be on "difficult" subjects, where recruitment and retention of teachers is usually difficult (and where pupil uptake and performance has been fastest to decline).

In fact, I have a friend who works in teaching who got into it via the scheme in one of its various guises. He's fairly open about both its strengths and drawbacks.

In terms of strengths, he quite openly admits that the salary supplement (which was less than the GBP equivalent of $20,000 when he joined - closer to around $8,000 equivalent) was a very attactive consideration, given that he was graduating with a fair old pile of debt. None of the other career options he was considering would have made it possible for him to move away from the parents and live independently in London quite so quickly. He's also noted that he (and others like him) actually know his subject (maths) to the extent that they can actually field questions from students that go away from the narrow syllabus. He was horrified by how many of his older colleagues were dependant on being allowed to stick to a very narrow syllabus.

On the other side of the coin, a lot of his intake to the graduate scheme dropped out relatively quickly - within the first year in many cases. The scheme was highly focussed on underperforming schools - which largely tend to be those which have the most severe discipline problems. It's no secret that many classes in those schools are more about crowd control than education. As my friend is the oldest of 6 siblings, he came to this with a natural advantage. By contrast, those who had gotten onto the scheme on the basis of academic ability often simply couldn't cope with the levels of misbehaviour, abuse and violence that are endemic in our less impressive schools and dropped out.

The other problem revolved around the reactions of other teachers - and particularly the teaching unions - to the scheme members. This is a profession where pay and career advancement had long been (and is still largely expected to be) determined by length of service, rather than performance or potential. Having a bunch of "bright young things" on additional pay and a fast track to Department-head and other management positions went down in most staff-rooms like a cup of cold sick. At the same time, the unions (membership of which is not mandatory, but is widespread) did everything they legally could to make life unpleasant for them. If you find yourself on a "Fast Track" scheme like this, you need to be prepared to be a bit of a staff room pariah.

So yeah, it's not a bad idea in theory, but expect results in practice to be mixed.

Grant supports expansion of research at the Enterprise Institute for Renewable Fuels

ST. LOUIS, MO, July 16, 2012 The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) awarded a five year, $12.1 million grant to researchers at the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center and their collaborators at the Carnegie Institution for Science, the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, the University of Minnesota and Washington State University to develop a new model plant system, Setaria viridis, to advance bioenergy grasses as a sustainable source of renewable fuels.

Drought is the number one stress crops endure which limits yield and is of growing concern due to the globe's diminishing water supply and climate change. This year, extreme heat and lack of rainfall combined with the mild winter has resulted in an all-time low in soil moisture and is producing new challenges for our nation's farmers. Reduced yields will likely spark a rebound in global food prices. Drought conditions also have a major impact on crops that serve as sources of bioenergy.

Bioenergy grasses hold promise to provide a sustainable source of renewable fuels for the U.S. economy and reduce our dependence on foreign petroleum. These dedicated second generation bioenergy crops can be grown on marginal lands and with fewer inputs than traditional row crops such as corn, which requires energy intensive annual planting and the addition of chemical fertilizers. Bioenergy grasses require water just like all other crops and the next generation of bioenergy crops will need to be bred for important characteristics including drought resistance and other properties that will make them more productive.

To engineer bioenergy grasses with the desirable traits needed for large scale production, it is necessary to develop model plant systems that are closely related to bioenergy feedstocks, but which are more amenable to genetic analysis. One of the most promising model species is the grass Setaria viridis.

"What we learn in improving bioenergy grasses in many cases can also be applied to cereal crops to improve their productivity. Setaria viridis, the model species that will be used as the focus of our research, is closely related to corn and Brachypodium, another model grass of interest at the Danforth Center that has a genetic makeup similar to wheat," said Dr. Tom Brutnell, director of the Enterprise Rent-A-Car Institute for Renewable Fuels who is serving as Principal Investigator on the grant.

Brutnell and his colleagues will utilize genomic, computational and engineering tools to begin the genetic dissection of drought and density response in S. viridis. The research team will produce one of the most extensive molecular characterizations of plant growth in the field to date, generating several million data points that will be collected from physiological and molecular genetic studies. In doing so, they hope to discover the mechanisms that underlie drought responses and identify candidate genes and pathways for improving the closely related feedstock grasses. The ability of bioenergy feedstocks to use water efficiently and to produce abundant yields at high density will be major drivers in the development of improved varieties that can serve as a replacement for petroleum-based fuels.

Co-PIs/Senior Personnel, Institutions on the grant include:

  • Ivan Baxter, USDA-ARS/Donald Danforth Plant Science Center
  • Asaph Cousins, Washington State University
  • Jose Dinneny, Carnegie Institution for Science

Real Estate Investing For Early Retirement: Let Your Earnings Do ...

???

Could you be the master of your fate? Are you the keeper of stock bonds, annuities, 401K investment? or do you simply wait for the monthly pay checks to come in, punch out, go to the lotto outlet, return home, do the same thing over again, and wish to good God you'll have ample greenbacks in your savings account for retirement? Unless those lotto tickets become a million-dollars, paying for them everyday isn't precisely a sensible idea when you're planning about how to invest for your early retirement.

There is a way more lucrative way to continue your investments and relying on volatile, intangible programs like stock bonds and mutual funds might not be a smart way to continue maximising your net worth. And whenever you're thinking "net worth," big numbers typically come to mind and when big figures come to mind, real estate moguls like Donald Trump (self-proclaimed net worth at $7 billion although Forbe's lists it at $4 billion), Ted Lerner ($3.3 billion net worth, owns 7,000 apartments and 750 private home lots) and Richard Le Frak ($5 billion net worth, owns 5,000 apartments in New York) pop up.

And thus, how do you generate a net worth that's greater than the GDP of some countries?

Take your cue from the super rich listed above and initiate thinking about smart real estate investing. Of course, guys like Trump, Lerner, and Le Frak have a head start on you so targeting for a billion dollars at his point would be about as realistic as getting a definite ROI on a stock investment. However if you arm yourself with the correct kind of advise and the correct kind of training when it refers to real estate investment, you might just start making more income than you can ever imagine.

One of the fundamental strategies to creating a success within your investment is to select the best property, which right now you might have heard that it usually signifies: location, location, location. And as stated by a recent report from CNN Money, college towns are turning out to be best moneymakers for a lot of real estate investors. It turns out, despite having the economic downswing, demand jointly with rent costs in these locations have grown to about 5 percent over the previous year, rendering most investors from different states with their most beneficial steady earnings.

If you're troubled about having to fund your investment with your own cash, here's a certain amount of good news: You don't need to utilize all your own cash. There are other existing solutions to your funding demands. Finally, depending on your financial circumstances and what you are comfortable with, these may include equity sharing with members of the family or organizations that have the available capital, private money loan (perfect for agents who give outstanding good deals for cash payment), private mortgage, and other financing strategies.

The old American dream used to represent a home with a two-car garage and a white picket fence. As we speak, that fantasy has shifted focus to job security. When you think your recent financial situation is going to force you to work beyond the retirement age, it's the time to take issues into your own hands. And all signs suggest real estate investment by means of clever and imaginative financing and acquisition. Learn more about real estate investment today and use that house with a two-car garage and a white picket fence as your key element to gaining financial freedom.

Vice Dos & Don?ts Book 2: 17 Years of Street Fashion Critiques

Vice

Vice Dos & Don?ts Book 2: 17 Years of Street Fashion Critiques is the latest book by the Editors of Vice magazine which is described as the ?sharpest, most acid-tongued anthology of street fashion critiques in the history of people giving a shit about street fashion.? It?s published by VICE Books and distributed by powerHouse books.

It has been eight years since the last book of DOs & DON?Ts. In that time, Vice magazine?s flagship column has changed from a couple guys in Brooklyn musing about pants to an international fashion juggernaut. With pictures sent in from thousands of contributors around the world and captions written by opinionated cranks around Vice?s offices in New York and London, the DOs & DON?Ts now represent the most incisive and honest commentary on street fashion in the last million years of humans wearing clothes.

This book collects the most exuberant DOs and lowliest, most stomach-turning DON?Ts from the last three years of Vice magazine and Vice.com, and presents them unto you in one tidy volume perfect for the cistern of your toilet or wherever else you keep your important reading material.

Nokia shutters two Chinese offices as part of strategic reorganization in the region

There's a hole in Nokia's heart and it goes all the way to China. Following news this past April that a massive restructuring effort was underway for Espoo's Asian operations, comes word that offices in Chengdu and Shanghai have been closed amidst declining market share. That's according to the Wall Street Journal which says the layoffs are targeted at the company's Chinese sales division -- an area Elop's made clear is essential for growth -- as Nokia's presence in the region has dwindled to 11 percent in Q1, a sharp drop from its more robust 30 percent share last Q2 2011. And with increasing competition from rival OEMs, the layoffs are expected to continue while the house that Lumia's attempting to rebuild gains its footing.

Documents conflict on when Romney left Bain

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Federal documents filed by Mitt Romney's former company appear to conflict with the Republican presidential candidate's statements about when he left Bain Capital, the private-equity firm central to his legacy in the private sector.

In a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission in February 2001, Bain Capital listed Romney as the company's "sole shareholder, sole director, chief executive officer and president." It said Romney's "principal occupation" was as Bain's managing director.

Romney's campaign repeatedly has said Romney had virtually nothing to do with the company's operations after February 1999, when he began work on the troubled 2002 Winter Olympic Games.

Romney "left Bain Capital in February of 1999 to run the Olympics, and had no input on investments or management of companies after that point," campaign spokeswoman Andrea Saul said Thursday.

Questions about Romney's control at Bain from 1999 to 2001 are important in his bid to oust President Barack Obama this fall. That's when the company oversaw investments that either sent jobs abroad or filed for bankruptcy. It's also a time during which Romney stated in federal disclosure forms that he was not active in Bain Capital.

For example, in late 1999, Bain-controlled Steam International set up overseas call centers, and a subsidiary moved jobs from California to Mexico. In 2000, the Ampad company declared bankruptcy. The following year, so did steel-maker GS Industries ? just as Bain made $58.4 million from its investment.

The two presidential campaigns differ about the extent to which U.S. jobs were affected. But the Romney camp's chief response long has been that Romney wasn't making decisions for the company when these events took place.

The campaigns exchanged sharp accusations Thursday about truthfulness and the issue of sending U.S. jobs to other countries.

Stephanie Cutter, Obama's deputy campaign manager, said Romney may have committed a felony if he misrepresented his role at Bain on the SEC documents. And if he was running Bain after 1999, Cutter said, Romney hasn't been truthful with the public.

"If that's the case, if he was lying to the American people, then that's a real character and trust issue," she said.

Romney's campaign, meanwhile, released a new TV ad titled "No Evidence." It accuses Obama of falsely depicting the former Massachusetts governor as someone who shipped jobs overseas when he ran Bain Capital. The ad, which will run in several battleground states, asks voters: "When a president doesn't tell the truth, how can we trust him to lead?"

The SEC document from February 2001 ? which has received modest attention despite being reported in recent days by publications including Talking Points Memo ? raises questions about Romney's role at Bain in 1999, 2000 and early 2001. If he turned his full attention to the Olympics in early 1999, as his campaign says, it's hard to square with the Bain SEC filing, two years later, listing his "principal occupation" as the company's managing director, and his titles as CEO and president.

Romney's campaign issued a statement Thursday from Bain that said Romney "left Bain Capital in February 1999 to run the Olympics and has had absolutely no involvement with the management or investment activities of the firm or with any of its portfolio companies since the day of his departure. Due to the sudden nature of Mr. Romney's departure, he remained the sole stockholder for a time while formal ownership was being documented and transferred to the group of partners who took over management of the firm in 1999. Accordingly, Mr. Romney was reported in various capacities on SEC filings during this period."

James Cox, a securities law professor at Duke University, said the SEC's "Schedule 13D" forms have always been under legal scrutiny by SEC officials and company executives. He said law firms hired to file such reports, known as "beneficial ownership reports" because they deem who can sell securities, "pay great attention to these forms. I don't find that these parts of the documents are casually reported."

"It's hard for me to believe you could be listed as 'management anything' without it taking up a bulk of your time," said Cox, who had not reviewed Bain's statement on Thursday.

Romney helped found Bain Capital in 1984. The private equity firm invested in various companies, often restructuring their management and operations. Some became success stories, hiring new workers and enriching Bain's investors. Others struggled or went out of business. Romney made millions of dollars, and he cites Bain as chief proof that he understands private enterprise and job-creation.

Romney eventually negotiated a retirement agreement with Bain Capital in 2002. The agreement was made retroactive to February 1999.

The Boston Globe reported Thursday that a Massachusetts financial disclosure form Romney filed in 2003 states that he still owned 100 percent of Bain Capital in 2002. Romney was elected to one term as Massachusetts governor in 2002.
