The nation's oil and gas wells produce at least nine billion liters of contaminated water per day, according to an Argonne National Laboratory report. And that is an underestimate of the amount of brine, fracking fluid and other contaminated water that flows back up a well along with the natural gas or oil, because it is based on incomplete data from state governments gathered in 2007.
The volume will only get larger, too: oil and gas producers use at least 7.5 million liters of water per well to fracture subterranean formations and release entrapped hydrocarbon fuels, a practice that has grown in the U.S. by at least 48 percent per year in the last five years, according to the Energy Information Administration. The rise is quickest in places such as the oil-bearing Bakken Formation in North Dakota or the natural gas-rich Marcellus Shale underlying parts of New York State, Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia.
The problem is that the large volumes of water that flow back to the surface along with the oil or gas are laced with everything from naturally radioactive minerals to proprietary chemicals. And there are not a lot of cost-effective options for treating it, other than dumping it down a deep well. But as certain states that are experiencing drought begin to restrict industrial water usage, fossil-fuel companies are experimenting with traditional and untraditional water treatment chemistries and technologies to try to clean this dirty water?or limit its use in the first place.
Recycling is not enough
The first option is to reuse wastewater in whatever ways possible. For fracking, "to the extent possible, fracturing fluid is recovered and recycled for reuse in future fracturing operations," says Reid Porter, a spokesman for the American Petroleum Institute, an industry group. "Recycling of flow-back water reduces demand for freshwater and reduces the need for disposal of wastewater."
But that water still has to be cleaned before it is reused, otherwise it loses the ability to do its subterranean dirty work. Simply dumping it improperly is not an option, because the high levels of salts and minerals will poison a river, stream or aquifer or it will render land incapable of supporting life for generations, like the salt pans of Utah or the ancient farm fields of Carthage salted by the Roman army. The cleansing technologies employed range from high-tech membranes that selectively filter out specific contaminants to the crude solution of boiling away the water, leaving scales of salts and other minerals behind on the walls of the boiler.
"Most of what we get out of the water are salts and a low-level of organics" (hydrocarbons and other contaminating carbon-based molecules), explains environmental engineer Steve Hopper, executive vice president of the industrial business group at Veolia Water, which is helping oil and gas companies cope with such "produced" water. "We have an example in California where we treated the water until it was so pure we had to add minerals back into it to be able to discharge it." The problem, thus far, has been cost, although Hopper argues Veolia's technologies add only "5 percent" to the cost of a given well.

Alain: I was introduced to swing dancing during my first year at McGill University in 2000. At the time, I?associated dancing with going to clubs and ?shaking it?. And although I had always loved it, I felt out of place in dance clubs because I found that most people didn?t go there to dance, but rather to look cool and to pick up.?So when I saw these students just dancing for the fun of it with each other, I knew I had discovered something special.

Alain: I think it accurately describes me.?I would describe myself as a spontaneous person who lives in the moment. I truly believe in carpe diem and remind myself daily that I could die tomorrow. I know, it sounds morbid, but this acceptance of death allows me to live without regrets and more importantly, to be open to experiencing and learning by living.
On Akoha, I find that many missions allow you to live?new experiences. And the resulting mission plays are inspiring. I learn a lot from fellow Akohans, which is why I give the ?Wreath of Inspiration? gift so often. I?m pleasantly surprised by how candid and authentic people are ? Akohans are not afraid to share their fears, their vulnerabilities, their deep emotions. I think being truthful and authentic is the greatest gift that one can give to another human being, and that?s what makes it such a pleasure working with the Akohan community.
In my own life, I try to be as open as possible and to be in touch with my emotions. So when other people do the same by sharing personal stories and experiences of themselves on Akoha, it resonates with me as a human being.
You also enjoy traveling. What are the top 3 places you?ve never been to that you?d like to visit?
Alain: These days, I travel mainly for dancing. I?ve been fortunate to have danced in London, Paris, Montpellier, Barcelona, New Orleans, Seattle, Washington, San Francisco, New York and many more locations.
In my top three places I?d like to visit, two of them have huge swing dancing communities. One is Melbourne, Australia, and the other is Seoul, Korea.?The third place I?d like to travel to is China. Although I have deep Chinese roots and have watched countless Hong Kong movies, I?ve never been back to the land of my ancestors. So if I could afford to, I would enjoy visiting Hong Kong and Tibet.
What is it like working at Akoha?
Alain: I enjoy working at a startup. I?ve worked in tech startups during the last three years of my life, and have discovered that the environment fits my personality.?I like the challenge of being in an early stage company, of having to take on many roles and responsabilities and of having to adapt to ever-changing situations. Every day is exciting!

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - The fallout from Facebook Inc's messy initial public offering widened on Wednesday as shareholders sued the social network and its bankers while a trading firm revealed a massive loss on the shares and threatened to seek "remedies."
The Nasdaq stock exchange also came under further pressure as a source close to the situation told Reuters that NYSE Euronext had opened discussions with Facebook about a potential stock listing there. Nasdaq also faces litigation from angry investors.
Facebook's listing, envisioned as a crowning moment for an eight-year-old company that has become a business and cultural phenomenon, has instead turned into a legal and public relations fiasco for the company and its lead underwriter, Morgan Stanley.
Serious trading glitches interfered with the stock's opening on Friday, and subsequent revelations by Reuters that analysts had quietly reduced their revenue forecasts prior to the IPO have led to accusations of selective disclosure of material information. The shares closed at $32 on Wednesday, 15 percent below the IPO price.
A lawsuit filed on Wednesday seeking class-action status alleged that defendants -- including Facebook, its Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg, Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs Group Inc and JPMorgan Chase & Co -- concealed "a severe and pronounced reduction" in revenue growth forecasts resulting from greater use of Facebook's app or website through mobile devices.
It also accused Facebook of telling its bank underwriters to "materially lower" their forecasts for the company. The lawsuit said the underwriters disclosed the lowered forecasts to "preferred" investors only.
"The main underwriters in the middle of the roadshow reduced their estimates and didn't tell everyone," said Samuel Rudman, a partner at Robbins Geller Rudman & Dowd, which brought the lawsuit. The firm is among the leading securities class actions firms in the country.
"I don't think any investor in Facebook wouldn't have wanted to know that information."
Andrew Noyes, a Facebook spokesman, said: "We believe the lawsuit is without merit and will defend ourselves vigorously."
Morgan Stanley had no comment. It said on Tuesday that Facebook IPO procedures complied with all applicable regulations and were the same as in any initial offering.
Also on Wednesday, Knight Capital Group Inc said its second-quarter results will be hurt by losses related to numerous issues during the listing. The firm, which provides electronic trading services to brokers and retail clients, foresees a pre-tax loss of $30 million to $35 million related to the IPO.
The company has submitted claims for financial compensation from Nasdaq OMX and is considering all legal remedies available, Knight Capital said in a regulatory filing.
Knight Capital's announcement may be a sign of things to come as other traders and investors tally up losses from the trading problems.
Nasdaq OMX was also sued on Tuesday by an investor who claimed the exchange operator was negligent in handling orders for Facebook shares. Morgan Stanley said it is reviewing Facebook trades and would adjust prices for some retail customers who overpaid.
A source familiar with the situation told Reuters that NYSE Euronext had opened discussions with Facebook about a potential stock listing there, and that the social networking giant was considering its options.
The largest U.S. exchange later denied it was discussing a full listing transfer with the company, which became the first U.S. company to debut with a market value of over $100 billion.
IPO INVESTIGATIONS
Wednesday's lawsuit, one of several that have been filed around the country, was brought in New York on behalf of Dennis Palkon and Brian Roffe, who said they respectively bought 1,800 and 200 Facebook shares at the IPO price, and Jacob Salzmann, who said he paid more than $123,000 on May 18 for 2,961 shares at an average $41.77 each.
Research analysts at several underwriters lowered their forecasts for Facebook after the Menlo Park, California-based company in a May 9 prospectus cautioned investors about the possible impact of users shifting to mobile platforms. Facebook currently makes little revenue from mobile ads.
Citing people with direct knowledge of the matter, Reuters reported this week that, during its IPO road show, Facebook advised analysts for its underwriters to reduce their profit and revenue forecasts.
The lawsuit named underwriters Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan and Bank of America Corp as having cut their forecasts after the May 9 prospectus was filed, but that these cuts were not publicly revealed before the IPO. [ID:nL4E8GM8SK][ID:nL1E8GN0FT]
The plaintiff-shareholders called the disclosures of Facebook's business risks inadequate, saying that analysts knew more about these risks and cut their business outlooks accordingly -- for the benefit of only some investors, not all.
"If Facebook told analysts to materially lower their forecasts, it should have told the entire market," said Antony Page, a professor at the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law. "We need to know what exactly was said to the analysts, and determine how different Facebook's public story was from its private story."
Regulators including the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, and Massachusetts Secretary of the Commonwealth William Galvin are now looking into how the IPO was handled. The U.S. Senate Banking Committee is also reviewing the matter.
"If Facebook faced a known and particularly salient risk, boilerplate language would be insufficient," said Elizabeth Nowicki, an associate professor at Tulane University Law School and a former SEC lawyer.
Bank of America and Barclays Plc are also defendants in the New York case, as are Facebook Chief Financial Officer David Ebersman and several Facebook directors.
Bank of America spokesman Bill Halldin, Barclays spokesman Mark Lane and Goldman spokesman Michael DuVally declined to comment. JPMorgan did not respond to requests for a comment.

With or without you, the information is out there. ?You may as well take a moment to redefine what it says ? to control the information and frame it in a light that is most positive for you.
1. Google Yourself
If you have not done so recently, take a few moments to Google yourself. ?What results do you see? ?If the results are unfavorable in any way, take action. ?Take down any questionable photographs, or set them to private. ?Delete any blog posts or comments to blog posts or tweets or other public statements that, in retrospect, may offend a potential employer or client (or simply give your opposing counsel something to hold over your head). ?
2. Update Existing Profiles
Your firm biography, LinkedIn profile, Twitter biography blurb, and any other bios out there should be kept up to date and should reflect only the most flattering things about you and your professional life. ?Whether you are a law student or practicing lawyer, you have crossed the threshold into the professional world. ?Your priority, on social media sites and otherwise, is to reflect a formal, professional, accomplished persona. ?
3. Contribute To Educational & Other Reputable Journals, Blogs, Etc.
If you run a Google search, as I am sure you have thousands of times, you will start to detect a pattern. ?Certain sites are favored by Google, and those sites will take a more prominent place in the search results than other sites again and again. ?In a professional context ? legal, specifically ? if you can associate your name with a law firm, academic institution, or popular legal journal or blog with heavy traffic (National Law Journal, Overlawyered, Lawyerist, and Ms. JD come to mind), your chances of appearing prominently in Google will increase. ?In upcoming months, make it a goal to contribute in some way to a prominent academic or other legal publication. ?Not only will this lead to a positive search result associated with your name, there is prestige in contributing to any such publication (if you work for a firm, clear this with them beforehand). ?When you do contribute, remember to update your resume, bio, etc.!

The joy is I can use my blog as therapy. That may be a bit of an exaggeration, but I do try to share some of my struggles and the things that I?m pondering on my blog. I find I think more clearly when I write. It?s a great process for me to work through different issues and spiritual questions. And I do find that people, on the whole, appreciate it and relate to me more. When they can see that I don?t hold myself up to be a ?perfect Christian,? they?re more likely to take the advice that I do give.
The negative, though, isn?t always so fun. There is a tendency in Christian circles to attempt to pigeonhole people, demanding that they fit into very narrow limits. And so when I tell what I think about controversial issues, or when I admit that sometimes I lose my temper, I do get some criticism. And sometimes I find the comments, especially on my blog, rather draining.
Speaking of ?real life issues,? you wrote The Good Girl?s Guide to Great Sex. This is a topic that is often skirted in Christian circles. How has your book been received?
It?s been really well received. I?ve been thrilled. I?m averaging a 5-star rating on Amazon, with 53 reviews so far, so that?s really encouraging. And the overwhelming consensus is that I ?tell it like it is? and talk just like a big sister.
What doors has it opened for you? Has it closed any that you are aware of?
As for what doors it?s opened, I?ll be starting several speaking tours next year around both the United States and Canada, focusing on marriage and sex. That?s exciting. I?ve mostly spoken to general church women?s groups up until now, so it?s fun to be doing something totally new.
As for closing doors, I wouldn?t say it?s lost me engagements, but one thing I was surprised and saddened by was how much Christian media seems to shy away from it. While the response from people in general has been wonderful, it?s been much harder to get TV and radio interviews for this book than for anything else I?ve ever done, largely because Christian media has said that they can?t tackle something that controversial. I find that rather sad because marriages are really hurting, even in the church, and we need to get good information out there if we?re going to help marriages thrive.
You got your start in writing when a joke you submitted was published in Reader?s Digest. Does humour mark most of your writing?
It certainly marks my speaking. In writing, I find it a little harder to be funny. I?m funny quite frequently in my columns (I write a syndicated family column every week), but it comes easier to me when I?m speaking. The fun thing about writing The Good Girl?s Guide to Great Sex was that I?ve been speaking on the topic for several years at FamilyLife marriage conferences, and so I was able to take the funniest parts of that talk and put it in the book. And sex really is quite a humorous thing. So this book is definitely my funniest.
How would you suggest writers remain true to themselves even when writing about life?s tough issues?
Just don?t be afraid of what people think. Yes, if you admit that you?re struggling, that you have doubts, and that you get discouraged, people may judge you. But they?ll be a minority. Far more will appreciate your honesty, and when we admit we aren?t perfect, we give people permission to admit that about themselves, too.
I don?t believe the Christian community is as judgmental as it was several decades ago, but I do think writers and speakers still often steer clear of controversy because we want to maintain our audience. I?d advise more just being honest about what you?re going through, and don?t try to live up to what you think everybody else experiences. The only good writing is authentic writing.
The title of your blog, ??to Love, Honor and Vacuum,? suggests you may have a traditional view of the wife?s role in marriage. How do you balance this with your speaking and writing careers? How would you suggest others find that balance?
I wouldn?t say the blog is traditional. The subtitle of my book is ?When you feel more like a maid than a wife and a mother,? and that?s what the blog really is about: How do you find fulfilling relationships when your life has become an endless to-do list?
The quest itself is an ongoing one for me. My children are now teens, so they don?t need my constant attention as they did when they were younger, which frees up my time to do more. But I find the demands of social media and marketing never end, and they?re constantly encroaching on what I want to be family time. It really is a constant struggle for me, and I don?t think I?ve found the solution.
